Beach, Please

JP Luby: dog walking, football, sand castles, frisbee

North Beach: dining, shopping, metal detecting, sightseeing
Port Aransas: camping, bonfire, yoga, birdwatching
Rockport: barbecue, volleyball, kite flying, bike riding

The salty breeze greets you on the shore and the light dances across the water.

"Swimming," "fishing," and "jet skiing." These are the words that came to mind when we asked Coastal Bend residents about beach activities. If you've noticed, they all have one thing in common: the water.

Picture fewer crowds and more snug sweaters. When it's too cold to get wet and you're longing for the sand between your toes, slip into a winter beach outfit and enjoy the shore. Whether you're a family with juice boxes, or you’re in your twenties with juice boxes, these activities are a sure-fire way to enjoy some fun in the winter sun:

Bonfires. No matter what you're doing, during the winter, a fire is at the core of every memorable beach experience. Warmth, s'mores, hot dogs, and a central location, the activity is irrelevant when considering the benefits.

Bonfires in Port Aransas, JP Luby, and Whitecap Beach should be limited to three feet tall, long, and wide. Always check local regulations and handle your fire responsibly.

Sports. The sand is the perfect place to get active. Layer up with some long johns or leggings and prepare to have fun. Football on the beach is a classic choice; toss it casually or use the beach markers as goal posts.  See how long you can keep a volleyball off the ground. Toss a frisbee; play fetch with your four-legged friend.

Camping. Winter nights on the beach are something magical. The crackling bonfire melts into the ocean waves. The next morning, you wake up, cacooned in blankets and enjoying the scenery through the mesh tent walls. It’s an Instagram post come to life.

Birdwatching, yoga, metal detecting, barbecues, kite flying, beach parties, sunset jogs, the options are truly endless. Whatever you do, please do it safely, within the rules of the beach, and ensure we only leave footprints along our coast.
