Plunging into the New Year

It's a held breath as the cool sting of needles prick your skin.

The Polar Bear Plunge is a global New Year's Day tradition where people jump into freezing water for charity, an adrenaline rush, or to try something new.

Over the last decade, Corpus Christi Polar Bear Plunge has raised over $130,000 for the ALS Therapy Development Institute. These funds help finance research efforts to find effective treatments in the most comprehensive drug discovery lab dedicated to ALS. This year, with a $20,000 goal, and at the time of this writing, more than half of it achieved, we are eager to participate. With an additional $15 donation, I purchased a polar bear hat/mitten combo that I'll be able to pick up at the event.

Fajitaville opens its doors to plungers at 10:45 A.M. Thirty minutes later, the Corpus Christi Roadrunners host a Beach Walk fun run to warm up for the dip. At noon, grit your teeth and race from the sand and into the frigid water for a bone chilling experience to remember. After the plunge, head inside Fajitaville for snack platters, drinks, and their heaters. As participants warm up, the top fundraising team and individual are announced.

This year, we’re making tiny improvements each day, and I can't think of a better way to start. With so many questions only time can answer, we’re forced to end on an ellipsis. To find out how the experience went, if the $20,000 goal was met, and what the turnout was like, stay tuned for the online exclusive follow-up.
